Connect public sources
Codified statutes and regulations need no setup. A free CourtListener connection adds cases, and one free federal key adds more federal sources.
Connect first. CiteMatch tests a key once your app or Word installation is connected to an active trial or subscription. How to connect
CourtListener for cases
Need an account? Create a free CourtListener account.
In the CiteMatch app
- Open Account, then Source access keys.
- Choose Connect CourtListener and sign in. Access refreshes automatically.
- To use a key instead, choose Use an access key instead, paste your CourtListener access key, and choose Test and save.
In Word
- Copy your CourtListener access key.
- In the CiteMatch pane, open More → Sources, then Source access. Paste the key under CourtListener access key.
- Choose Test and save free keys. CiteMatch servers do not store or log your key.
One free federal key
The free api.data.gov key arrives by email. Request your key. In the app, one key works for GovInfo, Congress.gov, and Regulations.gov, and SEC EDGAR needs no key. In Word, the key adds congressional reports, public laws, and the Congressional Record from GovInfo.
In the CiteMatch app
- In Source access keys, choose Get free federal key if you do not have one yet.
- Copy the key from the email, then choose Paste and connect. CiteMatch tests the key and saves it on this device.
In Word
- In More → Sources, paste the key under GovInfo access key.
- Choose Test and save free keys.
After you save a key
In Word, saving a key does not rerun a completed review. Return to Review and choose Check again. If you have not reviewed the document yet, choose Check my brief.
In the app, CiteMatch checks sources again after you save a key or connect CourtListener.
Saved keys
In Word, turn off Keep these keys on this device on a shared computer. To remove saved Word keys, open More → Sources and choose Remove saved keys.
In the app, keys are saved in the device's secure storage. Choose Disconnect CourtListener to end a CourtListener sign-in.
If a key does not work
In the CiteMatch app
- “That key was not accepted. Check the key and try again.” Copy the whole key again and paste it.
- “Reactivate your CiteMatch plan to check sources, then save this key.” Restore your trial or subscription in Account, then save the key again.
- “The provider could not confirm this key. Try again later.” The source did not answer. Wait a few minutes, then test the key again.
In Word
- “That key didn't work. Check that you copied the whole key, then try again.” Copy the full key again, without spaces.
- “CiteMatch couldn't test that key right now. It is saved and will be tested during your next review.” The source may be busy. Your next review uses the saved key.
