Each picture shows the button to look for. Open the panel under a step if what you see does not match.

    Download the installer.

Click the download button on this page. Your browser saves the CiteMatch installer to your Downloads folder.

Stuck? Here is what you should see.A browser window saving the CiteMatch installer to the Downloads folder.

If nothing seems to happen, look in your Downloads folder for a file whose name starts with CiteMatch. If it is not there, click the button once more and wait a few seconds.

  2. The CiteMatch installer window with one button reading Install CiteMatch in Word.

Open it and click Install CiteMatch in Word.

Double-click the file you just downloaded. A small CiteMatch window opens with one button. Click Install CiteMatch in Word.

Stuck? Here is what you should see.The CiteMatch installer window with one button reading Install CiteMatch in Word.

If your Mac asks whether you are sure you want to open a file from the internet, click Open. If the window seems to vanish, it is behind Word: click the CiteMatch icon at the bottom of the screen to bring it back.

  3. The Word menu at the top of the screen, open, with Quit Word circled, and the red close dot marked as the wrong choice.

Quit Word fully, then open it again.

Go to the Word menu at the top left of the screen and choose Quit Word. Closing the window with the red dot is not enough. Then open Word again.

Stuck? Here is what you should see.The Word menu at the top of the screen, open, with Quit Word circled, and the red close dot marked as the wrong choice.

If CiteMatch never turns up in Word, this is almost always the reason. Use the Word menu, choose Quit Word, wait a moment, and open Word again.

  4. The Word Home tab with the CiteMatch button circled at the right end.

Click CiteMatch on the Home tab.

In Word, click the Home tab, then click CiteMatch. The pane opens along the right side of your document.

No CiteMatch button on the Home tab? On the Home tab click Add-ins, then click CiteMatch under Developer Add-ins. After that first open, the button stays on the Home tab.

  5. The CiteMatch pane on the Settings tab, showing the Word installation code field and the Connect Word button.

Paste your code in the pane, under Word installation.

In the pane, open Settings, type the code under Word installation, and click Connect Word. The code works once and expires in 10 minutes.

Stuck? Here is what you should see.The CiteMatch pane on the Settings tab, showing the Word installation code field and the Connect Word button.

If the pane says the code did not work, it has most likely expired. Make a fresh code on this page and use it straight away. Copy and paste it rather than typing it.

Your code lives on the Get started page, next to this step.

  6. A brief open in Word beside the CiteMatch pane, with the Check my brief button circled.

Open your brief and click Check my brief.

Open the brief you want to check. In the pane, stay on Review and click Check my brief.

Stuck? Here is what you should see.A brief open in Word beside the CiteMatch pane, with the Check my brief button circled.

If the button does nothing, click once inside your brief so Word knows which document you mean, then click Check my brief again.

Connect the pane to your account.

Local style review runs as soon as the pane opens. Quote and citation checks against public sources need a trial or paid account and a free CourtListener key for uncached cases. Make a one-time connection code on the Get started page or under Account.

After you connect, Check my brief is on Review. Private source files are under More → Sources. The Table of Authorities is under More → Authorities.

If the pane does not appear.

Steps three and four above have a panel for this. Quit Word completely from the Word menu, open Word again, and on the Home tab click Add-ins, then CiteMatch. If the button still does not appear, write to support with your operating system and Word version. Do not send your document.
